Data dictionary
- outcode
- The outward code or postcode district, for example SW1A.
- incode
- The inward code, for example 1AA.
- sector
- Display form of the postcode sector, for example SW1A 1.
- postcode_area
- Alphabetic postcode area, for example SW.
- full_postcode
- The complete unit postcode in its conventional spaced form.
- town_or_city
- Best available locality label: city, then suburb, then post town.
- longitude
- Longitude in decimal degrees.
- latitude
- Latitude in decimal degrees.
Methodology and sources
Each row represents a live unit postcode. The sector combines the outcode with the first character of the incode. Postcode area is derived from the alphabetic prefix of the outcode. The town or city field uses the best available label in this order: city, suburb, then post town. Coordinates are supplied in decimal degrees.

Source datasets change over time and can contain omissions or revisions. Verify operational, admissions, financial or safety-critical decisions with the responsible authority.
