Famous People Near You

Every town has its famous sons and daughters, but most of us never know who they are. This tool searches a database of more than 17,000 notable Britons, each linked to the place they were born, and shows you who came into the world near any postcode you enter. Put in your own postcode and you may be surprised by the company you keep.

How It Works

Enter a UK postcode and we find its location, then search for notable people whose recorded birthplace falls within roughly 25 kilometres. The results are sorted by distance, so the people born closest to your postcode appear first. For each person we show what they are best known for, the town they were born in, and how far that is from your postcode.

What Counts as "Notable"?

The database is drawn from people with a documented public biography, the sort of figure who would have an encyclopedia entry. That includes actors, musicians, writers, politicians, scientists, sports stars and more. It is not a measure of how famous or important anyone is, simply a record of people whose lives are documented and whose birthplace is known.

Why Birthplaces Cluster

If you live in or near a big city, expect a long list. London, Manchester, Liverpool, Birmingham, Glasgow and Edinburgh have produced enormous numbers of notable people, partly through sheer population and partly through the pull of the institutions that make people famous. Smaller towns produce fewer, but often a single very well-known name. Either way, the local connection is part of what gives a place its character.

A Note on Accuracy

Matching a free-text birthplace to an exact town is not always perfect, and several British towns share the same name. Now and then a person born in one town may be matched to a similarly named place elsewhere. The headline results, the people born in your nearest town and city, are reliable, but treat the occasional distant or unexpected entry with a pinch of salt.
