Your postcode is the short code Royal Mail uses to identify your address, made up of an outward code and an inward code such as SW1A 1AA. To find your postcode right now, tap Find My Postcode below. The tool reads your device location and returns the nearest UK postcode from our database of over 1.8 million, along with its district, ward, county and region.

    How to Find Your Postcode

    What is a postcode?

A UK postcode is an alphanumeric code of five to seven characters that pinpoints a group of nearby addresses. It has two parts: the outward code (the area and district, such as SW1A) and the inward code (the sector and unit, such as 1AA). Together they narrow a location down to around fifteen neighbouring addresses.

Three ways to find your postcode

    1. Tap the Find My Postcode button above and allow location access when your browser asks. Your nearest postcode appears instantly.
    2. Type your street or town into the search box to look it up without sharing your location.
    3. Enter the first part of a postcode you already know to jump straight to its full details.

Finding your postcode on iPhone or Android

On a phone this tool uses your built in GPS, so the result is usually accurate to within a few metres. Make sure location services are switched on for your browser in your device settings. On a desktop or laptop there is no GPS, so the location comes from your network and can be less precise. If it looks wrong, use the manual search instead.

    Postcode or postal code?

In the United Kingdom a postcode and a postal code are the same thing. Postal code is simply the more general international term, while postcode is the standard British word. Other countries use ZIP code in the United States or PIN code in India for the same idea.

    Privacy

Your location data is only used to find your postcode and is not stored or shared. Location access requires your explicit permission through your browser, and you can use the manual search if you would rather not grant it.

    Accuracy

The accuracy depends on your device's location services. GPS enabled devices typically provide accuracy within a few metres. The tool shows you the distance to the nearest postcode centroid, so you can judge how close the match is.

    Frequently Asked Questions

What is my postcode right now?

To see your postcode right now, tap Find My Postcode and allow location access. The tool reads your current position and returns the nearest UK postcode in a second or two, with no need to type anything.

How do I find my current postcode?

Use the Find My Postcode button to detect your location automatically, or type your street, town or partial postcode into the search box. Both methods return your postcode along with a link to its full details.

Can I find my postcode without sharing my location?

Yes. If you would rather not allow location access, use the manual search box to look up your postcode by street name, town or the first part of your postcode. No location permission is needed.

How accurate is the postcode finder?

On a phone with GPS the result is usually accurate to within a few metres. On a desktop the location comes from your network connection, which can place you some distance away, so check the result and use the manual search if it looks off.

Is a postcode the same as a postal code?

In the UK, yes, they are the same thing. Postal code is the international term and postcode is the British one. Both refer to the short code that identifies your address for mail and deliveries.
