Frequently asked questions
How many police stations are there in the UK?
Our directory maps 1,317 police buildings across Great Britain: full police stations, force headquarters and public front counters, spread over 99 counties and 44 territorial forces. It does not try to include every small community office, and the numbers have fallen sharply over the past decade as forces have closed or merged front counters to save money.
How do I find my nearest police station?
Pick your county from the list above to see every station we hold for it, each with its postcode and town. You can click a postcode to explore the surrounding area, or open a station on the map to get directions. Bear in mind that many stations no longer have a 24-hour front desk, so it is worth checking opening hours before you travel. For anything urgent, always dial 999 rather than heading to a station.
Where does the data come from and is it accurate?
Station locations come from OpenStreetMap, a community-maintained map of the world, while the postcode, town, county and police force for each one are added by Postcodes UK from our dataset of 1.8 million postcodes. We match every station to its nearest real postcode, which is usually within a few metres. Details such as opening hours change often, so please treat this as a helpful starting point and confirm with the force directly before relying on it.
