Frequently asked questions
How many hospitals are there in the UK?
This directory lists 1,708 hospitals across Great Britain, from large A&E and teaching hospitals down to small community, mental-health and private hospitals. 232 of them have an accident and emergency department, and together they cover 99 counties. It is not a complete register of every NHS building, but it does gather up the hospitals that people most often need to find, each with a real postcode and location.
How do I find hospitals with A&E near me?
Open your county from the list above. Any hospital with a full accident and emergency department is clearly flagged in the table, so you can see your nearest emergency options at a glance. For urgent problems that are not life-threatening, use NHS 111 online or by phone, which can direct you to the right service. In a genuine emergency, such as chest pain, severe bleeding or difficulty breathing, always dial 999 straight away.
Does this include private hospitals, and where does the data come from?
Yes. Alongside NHS hospitals we include independent (private) providers and community and mental-health units, labelled wherever we can identify them. The locations come from OpenStreetMap, and the postcode, town and county for each site are added by Postcodes UK by matching it to the nearest of our 1.8 million postcodes. Hospital services and departments change over time, so please check with the hospital before travelling for an appointment.
