Easting and northing are the two components of a grid reference used to pinpoint a location on the British National Grid, the standard mapping system for Great Britain. They represent distances in metres east (easting) and north (northing) from a fixed false origin situated west of the Isles of Scilly. This system, maintained by the Ordnance Survey, provides a uniform way to describe any point in England, Scotland and Wales to a high degree of accuracy.
What Are Easting and Northing?
The British National Grid divides Great Britain into 100 km squares, each identified by a letter pair. Within each square, eastings and northings give a precise position. An easting measures how far east you have moved from the western edge of the square, while a northing measures how far north you have moved from the southern edge. For example, a six-figure grid reference such as TQ 285 801 means: TQ is the 100 km square, then 285 metres east within that square, and 801 metres north. This coordinate represents the approximate geographic centre (centroid) of the addresses covered by that postcode. Similarly, postcode sectors, districts and areas have derived centroids. When you look up a postcode on a mapping website, the easting and northing values are typically used behind the scenes to plot that point on the map. Without this link, postcodes would be little more than address labels.
