The National Statistics Socio-economic Classification, commonly abbreviated as NS-SEC, is a government-approved system for grouping people according to the type of work they do and their employment status. It was introduced in 2001 to replace older classifications such as Social Class based on Occupation (SC) and Socio-economic Groups (SEG). The system is designed to capture key differences in employment relations and conditions, including whether someone is an employer, self-employed, a manager, or an employee, and whether they have supervisory responsibilities. NS-SEC is used extensively in the analysis of census data, labour force surveys, and other official statistics to understand social and economic inequalities across the UK.
What is NS-SEC?
NS-SEC is built around the concept of employment relations. It divides the population into a set of analytic classes that reflect different levels of job security, autonomy, and career prospects. The full version has eight classes, but a three-class version is also available for simpler analysis. The eight analytic classes are:

Where does NS-SEC sit in the UK postcode and geography system?
NS-SEC is not a geographic classification itself; rather, it is a demographic or socio-economic variable that is attached to geographic areas. In the UK statistical geography hierarchy, census data on NS-SEC is published for a range of geographic units, from large regions down to very small areas. The most detailed level is the Output Area (OA), which typically contains around 100 to 150 households. OAs are built from postcode units, so every postcode is nested within a specific OA. Above OAs are Lower Layer Super Output Areas (LSOAs) and Middle Layer Super Output Areas (MSOAs) in England and Wales, with equivalent Data Zones in Scotland and Super Output Areas in Northern Ireland. NS-SEC data is aggregated to these levels, allowing users to see the socio-economic profile of a neighbourhood.
How does NS-SEC relate to postcodes or addresses specifically?
While NS-SEC is not assigned directly to a postcode or an individual address, it can be linked to them through the census geography. When someone looks up a postcode on a website that provides census data, the system will identify which Output Area that postcode falls within, and then retrieve the NS-SEC distribution for that OA. For example, a user might see that 30 per cent of households in the area are in higher managerial occupations, compared to 15 per cent nationally. Because postcodes are the building blocks of OAs, the classification is effectively available for every residential address in the UK, albeit at a neighbourhood scale rather than for a single property. This makes NS-SEC a powerful tool for understanding the social make-up of a street, a housing estate, or a village.
