The village is situated near the boundary between the historic counties of Dunbartonshire and Argyll, and its position offers views across the river towards the hills of the Clyde Valley. The area has a long history, with evidence of early settlement and a connection to the nearby Dumbarton Rock, which was once an important stronghold.
