About Calanais
Calanais is located in Na h-Eileanan an Iar, on the west coast of Scotland, within the HS2 postcode area. It is best known for the Calanais Stones, a prehistoric stone circle dating back to the Neolithic period. The site consists of a central circle of standing stones, with a prominent central pillar and several surrounding stones arranged in a radial pattern. This arrangement is one of the most significant examples of megalithic architecture in the British Isles. The stones are made of local rock and are believed to have had ceremonial or astronomical purposes. The site is accessible to the public and is managed by Historic Environment Scotland. The surrounding landscape is open and windswept, typical of the Outer Hebrides, with low vegetation and a sense of isolation that enhances the ancient atmosphere of the site.
