The village is best known for its railway station, which serves as a key junction on the West Coast Main Line, connecting Glasgow and Edinburgh with destinations further south. Carstairs is also close to the historic Carstairs House, a 19th-century mansion set within extensive grounds, though the house itself is not open to the public.
